Follow the jump to see how to make your phone update to Android 2.2 (Froyo) without using a PC.

DISCLAIMER WARNING: Messing with your phone’s ROM can screw it up. Proceed at your own risk.

What you’ll need:

1. A Motorola Droid

2. Internet access on said device

3. Ability to follow instructions

What you should already have installed from the market:

1. Download Crutch

2. Astro File Manager

INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP ONE: In your Motorola Droid browser, click the below link.

Note: If the download does not automatically start, you may need to install “download crutch” from the market.

STEP TWO: Move the zip file from the “download” folder in your SD card to the root or main folder of your SD card.
Note: If you haven’t already, download and install “Astro File Browser” from the market. This app will allow you to easily maintain your files on your SD card. It’s ability to move and rename files is essential to this walk through.

STEP THREE: Rename the zip file to “update.zip”

STEP FOUR: Power off your droid

STEP FIVE: While holding the “x” key, press the power button to turn your droid back on. Keep holding “x” until you see an exclamation point (!) inside a triangle with a picture of your phone next to it.
Note: If you get back to your home screen and don’t see (!) then it didn’t work. Try again.

STEP SIX: Press the volume up button and the camera button at the exact same time. This may take a few attempts as you must hit it just right. Once you get it, you should see the boot loader screen with several different options.
BOOT LOADER MENU:

Android system recovery <2e>
Use d-pad to highlight: center to select.
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

STEP SEVEN: Use the D-pad to navigate to the option apply sdcard: update.zip. Use the center button on the D-pad to select. The update process should begin immediately.
Note: If you get an error E:signtature verification failed you have a bad download. Just restart your phone and re-download the file. You may see E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command. This error will not affect the installation.

STEP EIGHT: Use the D-pad to navigate to the option reboot system now. Your phone will power off and then restart. It may take a while to load on the first restart as updates are still being made. Once it is finished, you should see your home screen.

CHECK YOUR WORK: From the home screen, click the menu button. Select “Settings”. Scroll to the bottom and select “About phone”. Look at “Android version”. If it says 2.2 then you did it right. Congratulations and enjoy using Froyo.

Overview: Photographer Matt Capps and an assistant will be traveling to Florida in June. While in the area, we hope to do several photo shoots. We will be shooting on the beach in the early mornings and evenings around sunset. We would also like to shoot some more athletic poses in and under water. The primary goal of these shoots will be to produce swimsuit calendar quality photos for use in portfolios. If we get enough good shots, we might even make it into a 2011 calendar.

When we aren’t shooting, Matt and his assistant (also named Matt) will likely be on the beach snorkeling. Models are welcome to join us.
